Shelter Island, San Diego

Did this on site during a gorgeous afternoon just after a rain storm had passed through.

The sky was incredible but changing so quickly!

After I had everything laid in I started on the tree and foreground. Suddenly, another rain impulse started pushing through and so I quickly dashed in the outline of the city and blew out of there. Irony being what it is, as I look back at this I realize that by rushing through the final bits I actually avoided putting in too much detail in the distance.

Lake George

Here’s one of my favorite fishing spots on the south shore of Lake George, in Mammoth Lakes, California. Yes, I've fished from that big rock...

Stovepipe Dunes

Here’s a painting based on a photo I took out at the sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley.

The sun had just gone behind the mountains but because the valley is deep there was still a lot of residual light. In fact, although it took me 30 minutes to hike back to the car, it was still quite light when I drove off. Cool!

I’ve been to DV many times as a photographer but have yet to go and paint. I’m going to put it on my list for next winter.
